Specialist in Media and Information Services : for partially sighted or blind people
Possible training course in the field of information and documentation
Blind and partially sighted people should be able to participate actively in social life and should have the same job opportunities as non-disabled people. That’s what the Frankfurt Foundation for the Blind and Partially Sighted had in mind when it was founded in 1837. For that reason over the years it developed concepts to occupationally integrate blind and partially sighted people.
In cooperation with other partner institutions, the foundation developed a nationwide unique training program. One of the offers is the training to become a Specialist in Media and Information Services ("FAMI") in the field of information and documentation. The practical training takes place at cooperating partner institutions as museums, press and broadcast archives as well as in public libraries and research departments of economic companies. The academic part of the training takes place at the Stauffenbergschule in Frankfurt-Bornheim. There the trainees are being looked after by qualified mentor of the Foundation for the Blind and Partially Sighted. They are responsible for curriculum and other formalities.
Activities and curriculum
The main tasks of a Specialist in Media and Information Services are researching, editing and providing of information. Most of the time this happens via Information Technology. They can qualify in the field of information management.
Requirements
In order to start a training to become a Specialists in Media and Information Services, good GCSE or A-Level results are required.
Moreover there is a possibility for further education to become an information specialist. Although to do this, a completed university or polytechnic degree is necessary. One should also have a good knowledge of the English language and basic computing skills.
Cost covers
If applied for at an early stage, costs are normally being covered by the Federal Employment Services or the Federal Insurance Institution for Employees. This includes among other things technical visual aids, speech or magnifying software.
